Arizona Diamondbacks

Arizona Diamondbacks 2020 Roster

Arizona has quietly built themselves a pretty good team, and they made some noise in the postseason last year. Paul Goldschmidt is the stud of this team, and by a wide margin. The Diamondbacks have above average talent like A.J. Pollock, David Peralta, and Jake Lamb. Players like John Ryan Murphy, Jon Jay, and Ketel Marte have stepped up and earned everyday spots. Jay was traded from the Royals, as Pollock went down with an injury. The rotation starts with Zack Greinke, who is dealing with declining velocity, but has remained effective. Robbie Ray and Zack Godley have been surprisingly good over the last two seasons. This has helped solidify a pretty weak rotation. Patrick Corbin has made his way back after the Tommy John surgery, and his slider is one of the best in the game. The bullpen is the weaker spot for Arizona, as Archie Bradley remains the one to trust.

Through just over 110 games played, the Diamondbacks are grasping a 1-game lead in the NL West. With the Rockies and Dodgers nipping at their heels, it is time for the team to find consistency in their starting pitching. Zach Greinke, Patrick Corbin, and Zack Godley have been he instrumental three in helping the team climb to the top of the division. The team recently returned Robbie Ray and Clay Buchholz, rounding out their rotation to full health. The team is still awaiting news on Taijuan Walker and Shelby Miller. Both of these spot starters may return before season’s end, but the mold of the rotation doesn’t call for an immediate need of influence. The basic need for their rotation is the run support to support the wins column.

The offense has been marginally good during both home and away splits. The majority of the impact and relief comes at the bat of Paul Goldschmidt. Goldy leads the team in all major statistical components, producing numbers that are worthy of an MVP vote or two. Other major offensive contributors include David Peralta, A.J. Polluck, and Jake Lamb. Polluck continues to improve his prowess at the plate, finding the patience needed to get on base. Lamb currently resides on the 10-day disabled list, with only a major setback barring him from quick return to health.

The team has struggled with keeping players healthy. When going up against these odds, the team has refined the tools of younger players and versatile talents. Ketel Marte continues to be a force at the plate and on the infield. He is building his consistency and reducing his errors to produce a solid defensive output. Daniel Descalso has been a blessing in disguise for the team. His appearances take him across the diamond, allowing for a true plug-and-play player that relieves any sense of doubt in player placement.

With the return of Lamb, the team can operate with sound lineup construction. His return marks for solidified piecing of the batting order and affords the team the ability to flex their infield and outfield defensive pairings. Jarrod Dyson is another run-preventer currently residing on the DL. His return brings speed and ball tracking to the outfield. He helps to prevent run-scoring opportunities and counters the speed of the opposing offenses. Run support will be the telling piece for this team to hold on to their lead and reach the post-season.
